Happy Holidays from all of us at the Behind the Mike Show!

Tonight, we had a conversation with Christina Wagner, a very busy person indeed. Christina manages several websites. One is DarnGoodDeals.com where she spends time featuring local businesses and local deals. She further informs us that by Googling the term, local first, you can learn more about the movement going on regarding moving people in the direction of shopping with local businesses versus the "big guys" because among other positive things, it puts money back into the local community. She also spoke about her other passion, social media and her website AZDealGirl.com which deals with all aspects of social media, how to use it and what you can do to change up your social presence a little. Her valuable information is just a browser step away!

From all of us to all of you, have a SAFE and HAPPY NEW Year! We want to see you back right here in 2011!

Another wonderful evening on the show..We spoke with Phil Blizzard who invented a little thing called the Thundershirt. This device is a shirt for dogs who have anxiety issues such as thunder fright, fireworks fright, separation anxiety and a host of other related issues. Simply put it is a device that calms you doggie down without the use of medication. Phil does a lot of work with animal shelters and animal rescues as well and has donated thousands of Thundershirts to them to help anxious dogs. In his first year and a half of business, this item has helped tens of thousands of dogs. Perhaps your dog needs one? Click his link below to learn more about Thundershirt and how you can get one.

Next up, our resident career coach Kay Stout joined us for a different Ideas for a Challenging Economy segment; she discussed some of her client success stories. We decided to take this route for the holidays and show people who are looking for work that there are success stories from all different people with different ideas of what they want to do. You might be surprised at one or two of them..we were! Also, Kay talked a bit about Facebook and some definitive DON'TS about posting in relation to your work status or job search status. Tune in and find out more.

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!!

Tonight on a very special Behind The Mike Show, we featured an Old Time Radio presentation of Charles Dickens' A CHRISTMAS CAROL for your holiday enjoyment.

The version that we aired originally aired on CBS Radio on Christmas Eve 1939 and was performed by the Campbell's Theater under the direction of Orson Wells. The title role of Ebenezer Scrooge was played by the very wonderful Lionel Barrymore.

We hope that you enjoyed this presentation as much as we enjoyed bringing it to you. From the Behind The Mike family to your family we wish you the Merriest Christmas and a Happy & Joyous New Year!

2010 CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA

Tonight on the show, we celebrated our favorite show of the year, the Christmas show. We hung up all the news and politics and we focused on fun and holidays.

Some of the highlights included:

Santa Claus: That's right, we interviewed the very man himself. Santa came by to send out a Christmas message to all the boys and girls from age two to ninety-two. We spoke to him about preparations at the North Pole for the big Christmas Eve run and some hints on what Santa likes on the special plate set out for him.

NORAD Santa Tracker: Once again, Lt. Desmond James of NORAD joined us for a briefing on how the whole Santa Tracker thing works. He explained the sophisticated software used to protect Santa when he is in NORAD's air space and how simply that all translates to their web service that allows parents and children to track Santa'a progress all over the world on Christmas Eve.

We had a lot of fun playing some favorite holiday songs, telling of fond holiday memories and we had our two very good friends Ray Gauthier and Grango (from "Back To The 80s") check in from the North Pole and you would not believe what magical things happened to them up there. So if you missed the LIVE show, then consider downloading this one to your iPod or favorite MP3 player (or computer) and listen on demand.

You can check out more about Robyn and her recipes by visiting her web site which is listed below.

Later, we were joined on the program by award-winning journalist, Todd Jensen who spoke about some of the best and worst Christmas movies available. We also covered some movies that are not truly meant to be Christmas movies but are classified as such because of the back drop. We discussed movies like A Christmas Carol, A Christmas Story, It's A Wonderful Life, plus many more. Tonight's show was a bit off kilter as our guest was unfounded. We still made attempts to discuss some of the topic material of holiday foods, entertaining and parties. Tony and Joel discussed some of their own Christmas traditions and also some of the things about society that have changed in the past two to three decades.

Later some discussion into a partial list of the many adaptations of Charles Dickens' A CHRISTMAS CAROL and how it is one of the most adapted stories in literature. The story has been performed in theater, film, television, radio and more in a nearly countless number of performances. On the show Tuesday December 21, 2010 the Campbell's Soup Theater version, which was aired originally on CBS Radio on December 24, 1939, will be aired.

Tonight on the show we spoke with Phil Margo. Phil is best known for being a founding member of THE TOKENS. He has been a very busy man doing music production, television production, writing and here tonight talking about his book, The Null Quotient. His book is a well done science-fiction novel that is easy to follow and reads very fast. It has a terrific blend of action, romance and all the sci-fi you can handle. Phil spoke about many of the things that he does in life and if we learned one important thing about him, Phil is having FUN.

Please visit his websites below and get the book, it's a great book, it's a lot of fun. We'll sure have Phil back again as he was a lot of fun speaking with. In fact, Stan Lee had this endorsement for the book: "Wow! Leave it to the hyper-talented Phil Margo to come up with an original, exciting, thrill-a-minute take on the theme of Earth's immanent destruction. 'The Null Quotient' has best-seller written all over it- and I can't wait to see the ...movie that's sure to come! Have a good trip, Phil."

Tonight on the program we discussed "Brain Aging" with Mark Underwood. Mark is a Neuroscience Researcher who has found that there is a protein in jellyfish that compensates for a protein that our body makes to keep our minds fresh. Mark stated that around the age of 40, the brain starts to age and therefore things falter such as remembering where your car keys are or maybe even having a slip of memory while talking to someone. Mark tells of the supplement that his company, Quincy Bioscience, has created, tested and is marketing called Prevagen.

Joseph Strider is one amazing dude! He is a Native American singer/songwriter who does some great things with an acoustic guitar. Tonight Joseph spent some time telling us of a past in music that included rock, heavy metal and more as he transitioned through the genres to acoustic. We featured his track, Just Like That. Check out his website below to get your hands on his latest CD which was nominated for a Nammy (NAMA Award) for Debut Artist of the Year.

Later on the show, Brian Gleason from Ulta Lit Technologies joined us and shed some light on one of the most frustrating elements of the holidays...Christmas lights that do not work. Ulta Lit makes a product known as the Light Keeper Pro and it is a tool that everyone should have with their box of Christmas lights. It diagnoses string lights that do not work. It helps save you many hours of troubleshooting. Brian also shared a lot of handy tips for troubleshooting lights, such as checking the lights each year when they come out of the box for loose bulbs. Tonight on the show we had a great and insightful interview with author and film critic, Alonso Duralde. Alonso has release a new book entitled, "Have A Movie Little Christmas" which encompasses a great selection of holiday movies that he has watched and reviewed. He looks at the best, worst and the strangest movies just in time for the holiday season. Listen in as he discusses some of these films as reviewed in his book. Check out his website and Facebook below and run out and order yourself a copy of the book today!

Later we interviewed Dr. David Oester of the International Ghost Hunters Society. This is Dave's second stop off at the Behind The Mike Show and this evening we discussed Parallel Dimensions. Dave tells us that science is finally getting on board with the fact that many parallel dimensions exist thanks to quantum physics. Of course, quantum physics is a language we may never, as layman, understand but it opens so many more possibilities in the discussion of ghosts and the paranormal. Dave also informed us that at this time of year, the IGHS receives many pictures from people's holiday reunions/parties with questionable objects on them to see if they may be relatives that have passed on that returned for the party. Show Notes - 11/23/2010

Diet Queen of the Red Carpet, Nikki Haskell joined us on the program and spoke about how to eat healthy during the holidays. For Thanksgiving, she advises the following tips:

  • Skip the appetizers. You’re about to sit down for stuffing, gravy and mashed potatoes, do you really need brie cheese, mini quiches and bacon wrapped scallops? If you’re hungry and need a little something to hold you over, go with a crudite, it will actually be healthy and filling and you may eat less during your Thanksgiving meal.
  • Treat your plate like a palate. First put your turkey in the middle of the plate and then place your vegetables on the side, and on the other side put no more than one tablespoon of potatoes, stuffing, gravy, or cranberry.
  • Do not pile on the food, and do not go back for seconds… no matter how tempting it is.
  • Try not to eat more than one full meal on Thanksgiving - despite how many places you party hop.
  • If you know your brother- in- law puts down 3 helpings of mashed potatoes, sit on the opposite end of the table from him. Never dine with anyone who eats more than you do. You will end up eating more, picking potatoes off their plate, ordering dessert, etc…
  • If you have hosted Thanksgiving yourself, send your guests home with all the leftovers or bring them to a food kitchen or shelter…and that includes the pumpkin and pecan pies!
  • If you’re not busy cooking and hosting all day, get in a really good workout in the morning and prepare to go the Friday after Thanksgiving as well.
  • Get back on the wagon the day after T-Day. For breakfast have a grapefruit. For lunch have a salad, and for dinner have a small piece of fish or chicken with vegetables.
Contact her for more about dieting tips, read her blog or learn about her weight loss product Star Shape by visiting her website below.

Later on the show, we were discussing the old fashioned toys that among other things made children use their imagination. Toys like Green Machine, Big Wheel, Slinky, Furbie, Rockem Sockem Robots and more. These days we are dealing with toys like the new barbie Dog that eats a biscuit then craps it back out...what have we become? Have our minds become Jell-O? We have strayed way too far to be able to get back to where we once were. Says Joel Michalec, " I think that we have lost the battle and that we have lost our youth".

Discussions on the show tonight began with a recap of the TSA news that seems to get more and more sad and disappointing as they seem to be running rampant with the complaints of groping during the so-called security pat downs. When will it be too much that our Constitutional rights are piece by piece dismantled? We will have to keep an eye on the news and see how this all pans out. Also November 24th is National Opt Out (of flying) Day. Let's all try and give the TSA nothing to do for a day.

Later on the program, we featured our monthly segment, Ideas for A Challenging Economy with Kay Stout. Discussion included not talking negatively about your workplace on your social networking sites. Also, Kay recommends that you not dismiss the holiday season as a time to reach out to networking contacts because many people begin hiring campaigns in the new year. Keep in touch, let them know that you are still out there.

Finally, Kay interviewed Matt Crevin. Matt is the public Address announcer for the San Francisco 49ers. He also operates a website and show called "Voice of the Box". He interviews people who work behind the scenes in sports and passes the information to everyone interested. Sports is a career field that shows no evidence of slowing up as far as growth and there are many overlooked opportunities to work in various aspects of the field. Visit Matt's website below to learn more about the opportunity that he reveals and how you can reach him for more info. Matt will appear on a future episode to speak some more about these opportunities and his show.

First up on the program, we interviewed Myles Marcus. Myles is a 17 year old singer from New Jersey and we featured his hot new single, "Jump" featuring Roy Hamilton III. Myles is also working on some of his own written music which is cool at his age because he is getting a lot of lead-way into the world of music. Check out him and his work by visiting his website below.

Later we had a discussion regarding the Transportation Security Administration's (TSA) "enhanced" screening by using the so-called Naked-Body scanners or the alternative of submitting to a full body pat down which includes them being permitted to check womens' breasts and both sexes genitalia and buttocks. If the TSA were not a federal agency then this would be known as SEXUAL ASSAULT/MOLESTATION. Another fine example of the government raping America. There was news about how images from these scanners can be stored and transported off the scanner (say..on the internet) so SMILE.

By the way CAIR would like the Europeans and Americans to NOT subject Muslim women to such searches..yeah, RIGHT! I am DONE flying!

Tonight on the broadcast, we welcomed a legend of pop culture. The one and only, Charles Fox. Charles has composed over 100 theme songs for television and movies (many of which carried on to become pop songs continuously on radio). He is responsible for such great themes as "Happy Days", "Laverne & Shirley", "Love, American Style", "The Love Boat" and more. He is also the composer of "Killing Me Softly (with his words)" and Barry Manilow's hit, "Ready To Take A Chance". Charles spoke about his book, KILLING ME SOFTLY...MY LIFE IN MUSIC and some of the stories inside the cover. As her puts it, every song and person he worked with has it's own story behind it. Charles remains very active in music today, having just written a theme song for the city of Beverly Hills.

We also spoke with Carla Gambescia. Carla is the owner of Via Vanti! Restaurant & Gelateria in Mt. Kisco, NY and we learned that she has several passions. Gelato, dogs and charity work. Enter the premise for her visit with us tonigh..Carla has begun a calendar featuring contest winners of a contest that she started in 2009. As Carla states, “This project began when I started to associate dogs’ colorings and markings with yummy gelato flavors – that I feature in my restaurant / gelateria,” says Gambescia. “I now create and feature a Party Dog Flavor-of-the-Month inspired by a one of last’s years 12 winners in my gelato case. I am also passionate about raising money for Guiding Eyes for the Blind and I am hoping that the calendars as well as the entry fees for “Dogs in Party Hats 2011” will continue to support this very important cause as well as celebrate dogs and all the ways they enhance our lives”. We here at Behind The Mike say that you must get these calendars. They are for a great and very necessary cause and this is one of the smartest ways to raise money for a great cause. You can find out more and purchase calendars at the link below. Order extra as gifts for co-workers and family.

We also covered a few news notes on the program tonight. These are also linked below.

We were joined on the show tonight by the lovely and talented actress, Catherine Mary Stewart. Catherine has starred alongside such leading greats as Karl Malden, Andrew McCarthy, Michael Pare and more. She is most notable for some of her iconic films of the 1980s; Weekend at Bernie's, Night of the Comet, and The Last Starfighter. Catherine is Canadian born and has made the United States her home. She has a very successful resume on both television and feature films.

This holiday season, Catherine stars in A Christmas Snow with Muse Watson and Cameron Ten Napel. Catherine plays Kathleen Mitchell who is haunted by the fact of her father left her on Christmas Eve 30 years before. This Christmas she finds herslf stranded over Christmas in a blizzard with two unlikely house guests. The storm brings her close up with the pains of the past and leaves her to make a choice...can she forgive? The movie is a gem and a fine inspirational holiday film that the whole family will love. The character development is superb and Catherine plays the part of Kathleen very beautifully. It contains a wonderful soundtrack as well that compliments the story.

A Christmas Snow will be available in stores nationwide on November 30th. The story is based on the novel of the same name by Best-Selling Author Jim Stovall who also wrote a wonderful companion book to the movie entitled, "Sam's Journal: Restored "and that will hit bookstores everywhere on November 23rd. Be sure and pick up your copy of both for the holidays and get an extra copy for a gift.

Also tonight with a very important message regarding the scam that has been circulating around the internet and especially throughout email providers like Yahoo! Gmail and also Facebook. What happened today is that host, Joel Michalec, was scammed in all his web-based email systems and Facebook. The scam basically delivers messages to your contacts as "you" claiming to be in another country, robbed and in need of money...lots of money. The idea is that they try and get you to email them back and get into a conversation then lure the money from you.

JOEL IS FINE AND IN THE UNITED STATES. Do not fall victim to this. Delete the emails and steer away from the Facebook messages about him being in trouble.

One of the first things to look for when you do gain entry back into your web account is to see if the settings are such that emails are being forwarded away from your account. This is how they gain control and keep you from getting emails. It will forward the mail to an account they are using to collect email addresses, delete the email so you never see it and in some cases, turn on your vacation reply so the person who emailed you thinks that you are away. It's a very scary situation.

Show Notes - 11/07/2010

On the program tonight we began with what may perhaps be one of the single saving graces of the Obama Administration. President Obama announced a deal with India that would produce nearly 60,000 U.S. jobs. If this story pans out to be true this will be a major boost to the economy while also shaving down the number of the unemployment. We'll have to wait and see.

Also, President Obama seems to be back-peddling and taking the blame for the Democratic party losses in the Mid-Term elections. This may be a move to absorb some blame and positioning himself so he looks poised to work out bipartisanship with the House and Senate. We followed up with some talk about the penalties in the NFL and complained a bit about that.

Mark Gumbinger from the website Edmund Fitzgerald Online stopped by the show to discuss the maritime disaster of the freighter SS Edmund Fitzgerald; which was lost on a November storm on Lake Superior on November 10, 1975. We reviewed the final moments of the ship and some possible scenarios to the sinking. The Great Lakes have claimed thousands of lives and ships over the years. You can visit his website for some very interesting DVDs on the Fitxgerald and on other maritime topics.

Another installment of SOMETHING SPONTANEOUS occurred tonight and Joel read the classic story "Green Eggs & Ham" by Dr. Seuss. You never can tell what may happen on Something Spontaneous.

ELECTION NIGHT COVERAGE
MID-TERM ELECTIONS 2010

Tonight was a special two-hour election night coverage where we kept a constant look at the races as the night went on. It seems that there is some definite movement the other way in both Congress and the Senate which should bring about some interesting political changes in the government. Let's imagine if it does not then there should be some high accountability for what is going on here. The patriot and tea party movements who brought forth these changes must ensure that their rallies and cries continue to be sure that the people erected to office hold true to the promises made to the people.

We kept a check on the races that were reporting and some big ones not yet posted at the end of show time included Alaska and Nevada.

Later, we spoke with author and concerned voter, Dennis Wolfe. Dennis was on the show previously discussing his book, The Sick Solution: A Prescription for National Health. He joined us tonight to help discuss some of the important races, important issues and important points about the health care reform. Dennis shared his concerns about a few different new layers of government that the new bill will create including:

Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI): The Institute and its activities would be governed by an independent, 19-member Board of Governors that includes the director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the director of the National Institutes of Health, with the remaining members appointed by the U.S. Comptroller General. Among these appointed stakeholders, there are three representing patients and health care consumers; five representing physicians and providers; three representing private payers; three members representing pharmaceutical, device, and diagnostic manufacturers or developers; one representing quality improvement or independent health service researchers; and two representing the federal government or the states.

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ): See above

Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB): Beginning in 2014, in any year in which the Medicare per capita growth rate exceeded a target growth rate, the IPAB would be required to recommend Medicare spending reductions. The recommendations would become law unless Congress passed an alternative proposal that achieved the same level of budgetary savings.

For more information visit the link below. You can also contact Dennis directly by email, jdwolfe@jdwolfe.com and he will be happy to discuss further and even send you a copy of his book, just for the asking.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

On tonight's program, we spoke with Pop Culture Guru, Rob Weiner. Officially, Rob is the Associate Humanities and Performing Arts Librarian at Texas Tech University. That sounds like a way cool job anyway..and it is! So on Halloween, we spent the evening (or most of it) talking about pop culture as it relates to horror, terror and beyond.

Plenty of information for the horror fan came bustling out and we learned quite a bit while talking to Rob. One thing that was noted that there is much more horror crossed with superheroes than you might think. Some titles of some graphic novels include: Batman vs Nosferatu, The Monk, Batman vs Dracula. Here is another example; the following video is one of the very best fan-made short films that puts Batman in a very terrifying predicament:

Some films that were mentioned as well: To the Devil a Daughter, Bloodfeast, Dead Girl, Cannibal Holocaust. Also, Rob says that his Halloween Pick is Black Sabbath. So there you have it; a great Halloween show with a fantastic guest. If you missed it, please download the archived podcast and check it out..it might help you build a new list of must see movies.

Dr. David Oester from the International Ghost Hunters Society stopped by to spend some time talking about ghosts and the paranormal. We covered a lot of ground but there is so much more that beckons discussion.

We clarified some things like orbs in pictures, vortexes and EVP. EVP is more commonly known as Electronic Voice Phenomena and it is the name for when you record the voice of ghosts.

We also talked about paralell dimensions and a caller asked us about seeing an image of herself which we explained is a doppleganger. A doppleganger is described as a spirit of oneself or a tangible double of a living person. Scary stuff. Be sure and check out Dr. Dave's website below and sign up for the very informative newsletter so you, too can learn some techniques for investigating ghosts in your home or other places. They recommend that you do the craft during the day when it is safe.

TERROR FILM FESTIVAL
October 21-23, 2010
Ethical Society Building

1906 South Rittenhouse Square
Philadelphia, PA 19103

On tonight's broadcast, we discussed the security breach in Facebook's third party applications. Such famous apps like Farkle, Farmville and more have been passing private information to other websites that collect data. This means even the users who have very tight security controls. This might make you think twice before wasting your minutes away on the play apps on Facebook.

Later we welcomed back to the program the one and only Diva Fashionista of the Terror Film Festival, PRINCESS HORROR. The Terror Film Festival is in it's 5th year and is very successful showcasing independent films from the horror, thriller, sci-fi and other similar genres. The lovely princess promises that only the best will be shown at the festival including some great short films. Also, the Princess has announced that her and Claw have put together a music CD just in time for Halloween. The tickets, the CD and all the festival information can be found at the website below. Be sure and get your tickets and go see the films.

Show Notes - 10/17/2010

A new segment entitled "SOMETHING SPONTANEOUS debuted on the show and it is a segment where just about anything can happen. On this installment, Joel & Don acted out the "Who's On First" skit made famous by Abbott & Costello. Considering that we are not actors, it turned out very well.

Next up, Singer/Songwriter Doug Rausch stopped by to talk about some music history. The one thing that resonates from talking with Doug is the fact that he has a rich music upbringing and he has a strong hold on the history behind music. Doug started honing his craft at the age of 8 and from then it has been a journey in search of great music. To our ears, the journey is going very well. We featured the track, "It Happens" which has influential foundations from the likes of Queen, Pink Floyd and more.

Kay Stout joined us for another installment of our monthly feature, Ideas For A Challenging Economy. Every third Sunday of the month, Kay comes onto the panel to discuss careers and job trends including different changes in the economy. The one major discussion for tonight was the fact that people looking for work and have a desire to help people may consider work at a foundation. Check out the show podcast to learn more and contact Kay below to discuss with her in more detail.

Show Notes - 10/12/2010

Tonight on the program we discussed the Social Security Administration's findings that 72,000 stimulus checks of $250 each were sent to deceased people. Just another reason why the government needs to be checked and balanced as to what they are doing with tax dollars. We are going broke! The worst part of the story is that not all the money has been recouped which means that there are some very happy people in heaven with money in their pocket.

Next up, we discussed a story from FactCheck.org that debunks a video and story that has been circulating for some time regarding President Barack Obama's speech about raising a private "Nazi-Style" Army. Well, it appears that it had a little tailoring and doctoring and what he was truly discussing was expanding the health corps of America for times of emergency.

OPEN CANDIDATES FORUM

Tonight on the broadcast we introduced and welcomed our new intern, Cash Young. Cash is a student of the music production field and will assume the duties of Research Assistant as well as helping out with social media duties.

Before the main part of the show, we discussed a news story regarding the South Fulton, TN Fire Department refusing to respond to a rural Obion County home owned by Gene Cranick which caught fire. The refusal was because he forgot to pay his $75 Fire Services Fee for the year. His neighbor called for fear that the fire may spread to his property. He did pay his fee so they responded...and sat there watching Mr. Cranick's home burned completely to the ground! We have NO idea what moral standard any firefighter uses to stand by and watch a fellow man's home burn to nothing. How dare they call themselves firefighters. In the opinions of this host, they are not even equal with humans and we have opened a challenge for any one of them to come onto the show and explain this to us.

The main segment of the show was an Open Candidates Forum. We sent out many invitations to Delaware politicians to join our forum and speak about the issues, their campaigns and aspirations for office. The panel consisted of:

  • Senator Colin Bonini (running for Delaware Treasurer)
  • Brent Wangen (running for US Congress)
  • Jim Rash (running for US Senate)
  • Will McVay (running for DE Representative 32nd District)

Each candidate had 5 minutes to speak freely and uninterrupted regarding their stand and then we had a round table session on some of the issues as well as some questions that were emailed to the studio. All of the candidates have some very good points and stand on very good values. Please do yourself a favor and download the podcast and listen to their speeches and our discussion and visit their websites below to learn more about them. We encourage you to call them or speak with them at rallies and find out what great values they have. This is our way of helping concerned voters make educated decisions on election day.

The candidates also wanted to pass along a special mention to the League of Women Voters who have initiated some rallies where ALL candidates on the ballot are allowed to appear and speak. There are two events to mention:

Tonight on the program, we discussed the NLDS which kicks off on October 6, 2010. We compared some of the line-ups and made some amateur predictions. We also talked about the two Philadelphia Police Officers who were arrested and charged with robbery. They were videotaped stealing 20 pounds of marijuana and $3000 in cash from undercover officers posing as drug dealers. The City of Brotherly Love is turning into a Live version of every "bad cop" movie ever made.

Tonight on the broadcast we spoke about several stories from the news but we started out with some conversation about the officiating lately in the NFL. It seems to be very common knowledge among analysts and fans alike that the officials have officially lost their whistles and are not calling the games correctly. In some cases they are also mis-handling the play clocks. So we say..."Quit playing with your clocks and pay attention to the game!"

Reviewing The U.S. Constitution
Amendment 8 - Cruel and Unusual Punishment. Ratified 12/15/1791.

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

Tonight on the show we spoke first about Stephen Colbert's address to US Congress on the issue of Immigrant Farm Workers. Stephen's prepared statement hit the topic and also poked a lot of fun at the Congress including comments like this one, "Maybe this Ag Jobs bill would help, I don’t know. Like most members of Congress, I haven’t read it". He poked many more stabs than that and you can see the video and read the entire transcript by visiting the links below.

During a discussion tangent, a caller verified for us that as of last week, she knows that the rumor of being able to get fired for any reason and collect unemployment benefits is FALSE. Thanks for the call and the report!!

Later we discussed a study by the Highway Data Loss Institute that states that the new "texting-while-driving" bans are not working. The institute shows that in four states (California, Washington, Minnesota and Louisiana) crashes have increased after the ban. The sole reason perhaps is that the police have to be held responsible for enforcing the laws and the consequences are not severe enough in our host's opinion. Links to the data on the 30 states who have laws are listed below.

Behind The Mike Presents BEYOND THE GAME SPORTS TALK

This evening we took a break away from all the day to day news and political banter and took a look into the world of sports (specifically MLB and NFL).

First up in the NFL we discussed some breaking news regarding Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles. Andy Reid (Head Coach) announced that Michael Vick will start on Sunday 26 September 2010 against the Jacksonville Jaguars and for the foreseeable future. This move has nothing to do with Kevin Kolb's recent week 1 concussion but more to do with Michael Vick's performance in week 1 after coming into the game for the injured Kolb with a 20-3 deficit to work with and came back in the loss 27-20 with 175 passing yards and 103 rushing yards. Then starting week 2 he had 284 yards with 2 touchdown passes and a win of 35-32. What will happen if Vick takes the Eagles all the way to the show this year???

Other topics covered were the NY Jets and their big talk leading up to week 1 and they lost that game and looked very bad in the first half of week 2, plus the controversy with the female sportscaster dressing skimpily now wanted to complain about the gawking...can you give us a break. Finally, 23-year old Denver Broncos Wide Receiver Kenny McKinley was found dead at home of a supposed self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

In MLB news, we covered some of the injuries that plagued some of the teams including two major injuries to Atlanta Braves 3rd Baseman Chipper Jones' season ending injury as well as Washington Nationals Starting Pitcher Steven Strasburg who will be out for 16 months to have Tommy John Surgery. We also updated the current postseason picture and reviewed some stats plus Don and Joel had a friendly argument regarding a possible rematch of the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees in the World Series.

Reviewing the U.S. Constitution
Amendment 6 - Right to Speedy Trial, Confrontation of Witnesses. Ratified 12/15/1791.

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense.

What a great show we had tonight. First up we interviewed Pop sendation, Florence LaRue. Florence is the only original member of The 5th Dimension and she still maintains a full ensemble band and they tour the United States, Europe and Asia playing the great music that made the band so popular over the past four decades. She also has a one-women show aside from the band's tours and she keeps very busy with humanitarian efforts and speeches. You can check out their schedules at the websites below.

Next we spent some time discussing the voter turnout percentages in some of the latest primaries and how in many cases, less than one third of the voters turned out to vote. These numbers are hardly enough to make any difference at all in the General Election. So we stressed the importance of getting out there and voting so we can make a difference.

Finally, we had our monthly segment, Ideas For A Challenging Economy with Kay Stout. This month, Kay discussed among other career topics, six things that you should not do with your Facebook account. No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.

It was 2010 Primary Night in seven states; Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Wisconsin. In yet another major blow to the GOP, Republican Conservative Christine O'Donnell tumbled Mike Castle with a 7% margin. She will go on to face, with plenty of opposition, Democratic hopeful Chris Coons. Delaware was the only poll that closed out with positive reporting results by the end of the show. Use the link below to check on the other results.

Later we interviewed Bran Vrbaski, known as the band Rebel Bran. Bran is a Serbian born singer/songwriter transplanted to British Columbia and draws inspiration from a complete array of his surroundings to write his music and lyrics which by the way, he puts them together at the same time. We featured his track, SONNY which has a feeling of blues to it with a fantastic harmonica accompaniment. Check out more from Rebel Bran by visiting their sites below.

On the program tonight we began with a music/news tribute to the fallen of the terrorist attacks on 9/11/2001. The tribute was produced by Tony Richards from Reality One Radio. The attacks, unbelievably, happened nine years ago. We spoke a little about what people were doing when they heard about the attacks and some other memories.

Next up was some hot topic issues such as Barack Obama looking at angry Americans coming to the polls in November and some facts behind his own words regarding the health care crisis. Turns out, as any politician, he was lying. How do we know? He moved his lips.

Later on the show, we took a look at the Fall preview as per Entertainment Weekly and talked about some of the shows that are exciting us: Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Blue Bloods, Hawaii 5-O and more. Tonight on the program we talked about TAXES. First of all, the 2001 & 2003 Tax relief (commonly known as the Bush Tax Cuts) are expiring on January 1, 2011. We talked about the issue that so many people on the Left & Right would have you believe that these expirations will lead to small businesses going under when in reality less than 2% of the tax returns filed last year would be affected by this. We propose that you must have alternative sources.

There are also many tax hikes coming from Obamacare including tax laws that will affect brand name drug formulas, HRA, HSA and FSA accounts, Tanning and Employer Reporting of Insurance Costs on W-2.

Amendment 2 - Right to Bear Arms. Ratified 12/15/1791

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Tonight on the show we started out with the National Anthem. Please be so kind as to remove your hats and place your right hand over your heart if you are listening on the archived podcast. John Jay Myers, Libertarian Candidate for U.S. Congress in Texas' 32nd District joined us for a few minutes this evening to speak about an article that he wrote entitled, "Stop Stealing Our My Stuff". The article discusses an analogy of the corruption running rampant through the Federal Government; tax money going to foreign nations, mosques and other things that are just so unnecessary when we as a nation are trying to fight a fledgling economy and imminent depression. He begs to ask...will we continue to make the same mistakes over and over at the polls?

Next up, we talked about the long wanted idea of reducing big government. How do we do this? Well, there are probably many answers for that however, we tackled one issue; Dump the Cabinet. We reviewed some of the cabinet positions that can be eliminated and why.

**Production Note :: This segment will be discussed on the show Tuesday September 7, 2010 ** Finally, we are just three months away from the largest tax hikes in American History. Are you ready? Do you know what they are? Listen to the show archive to find out what you might be shelling out in extra taxes come November.

Reviewing The U.S. Constitution
Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression. Ratified 12/15/1791.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Tonight we began with a conversation with our very good friend, Sean Sublette. Sean is the Chief Meteorologist for WSET-TV in Lynchburg, Virginia (ABC Affiliate). Sean talked about the weather outlook for the Eastern Seaboard this week with Hurricane Earl on the prowl. Specifically we found out why we will still have sunny weather all week with a hurricane within 200 miles of shore and Sean gave us one heck of an education on the behavior of hurricanes. Also, he shared his thoughts on the Farmer's Almanac and their prediction for this winter. Tune into the archives to hear a great conversation with Sean.

Next was a small discussion on work attitudes. With the current state of the economy and slim chance for relief anytime soon, we observed that there are plenty of people out there with very nasty attitudes and that really looks bad on the company they work for and reflects negatively on the patrons of the business. Are you so independently wealthy that you do not need the job? We say that if you are so unhappy then please quit and give an American with a strong will to work an opportunity.

Finally, a look at a rumor heard at the Delaware Candidates "Meet & Greet" in Newark, Delaware about a 1% tax on ALL bank transactions being passed into effect right after the mid-term elections. We here at Behind The Mike felt it necessary to do some follow up investigative work and found that it is a twist on the truth. There is a Congressional House Bill that was introduced by Congressional Representative Chaka Fattah (PA-2) on 2/23/2010. The bill (H.R.4646) according to Fattah would "establish a fee on transactions which would eliminate the national debt and replace the income tax on individuals." Looking at it this way and studying the bill, one can see that it could be a good idea if done right by the principle. There are some gray areas obviously but remember this: first, it probably will not see the light of day because it is a pretty good idea and second it is only a proposed bill. So please be wary of emails talking about this as a bomb being dropped on taxpayers.

First up was Brock's recent trip to New York City where he had the opportunity to talk to some people, namely street vendors, and there is an economical mainstay regarding pricing and Brock almost at every instance was able to negotiate his price for goods and services down nearly better than a stop off at priceline.com. Otherwise, he says that the best way to get around is by way of the petty cabs; he states they are very unique.

The point of Roger Clemmens surfaced regarding steroid use. The argument was not settled tonight as there seems to be a paradigm shift in the thinking of society on this issue. Would as many people who think it is OK today thought the same two decades ago? One decade ago?

Other random stories included health care, Barack Obama, Iran, Iraq, Israel's recent request for $2 Billion in fuel from the United States, Fidel Castro and much more.
