Show Notes - 06/29/2010

We started out the show tonight in an informative mood; we had Chief Meteorologist Sean Sublette (WSET-TV Lynchburg,VA) stop in to explain a few things to us regarding these predicted "fierce" hurricanes. Sean explained that la Nina is the cause for some of this violent weather and he also straightened us out on something. He said that contrary to what you may or may not have read/seen, a hurricane that rides the Eastern Seaboard from the Southeast will not bring oil up the shorelines. Of course if a bad hurricane comes wandering into the Gulf of Mexico then there would be some problems with oil damage. Sean also said that he is watching Tropical Storm Alex and he said that it should hit Texas somewhere about the Rio Grande River on Wednesday morning as a Category 1 hurricane.

Next up, Jack Hosley returns to Behind The Mike. Jack runs a very entertaining podcast called "Wander Radio". On the program, Jack brings to his listeners the very best unsigned music from around the globe, music and entertainment news, audio book reviews and news and so much more. Now Jack brought up a new concept that he is doing (which is an old concept to him); he will be getting back into doing radio dramas. One of the things he announced was that Wander Radio Productions will be releasing a serialized version of "Treasure Island" soon and he brought along a sneak peek for us to listen to. The plan is for 34 episodes that will appear on the Wander Radio podcast.

Other things we discussed was our show's common interests with music and we discussed some of the differences between major labels and independent labels and differences in music yesterday and today. We also compared interview techniques and how we prepare for shows in our own ways. Basically, some of the material on the show tonight could be used as a learning lesson for anyone looking to start podcasting. Of course, everyone has their own way of doing things but this is just ours.

Finally, we took a caller (Judy in PA) and she was adding to our conversation about audio book readers, namely Scott Brick, who was interviewed on the Behind The Mike Show (Show 109).

Show Notes - 06/27/2010

Tonight on the show, we talked about a nice handful of relevant topics including the story that broke last week regarding the potential lawsuit that McDonald's is facing by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). CSPI states that, "By advertising that Happy Meals include toys, McDonald's unfairly and deceptively markets directly to children. When McDonald's bombards children with advertisements or other marketing for Happy Meals with toys, many children will pester their parents to take them to McDonald's." I do not agree with this statement and who allows an advocacy group like CSPI to make these parental decisions for us?

I say that McDonald's has been a stand-up leader in making improvements to place health-conscious food items on their menu. That gives us the choice and that is what freedom is all about; the ability to make our own rational decisions. I, for one, sincerely hope McDonald's fights this tooth, nail, cheese and pickle! First of all, the Happy Meal that you see advertised mostly is a 4-piece Chicken McNuggets, apple slices and 1% low-fat milk. Give me a break...I mean it, I deserve a break today! Find something relevant to bark about and leave the parenting up to parents!

LISTENER EMAIL FROM THE EMAIL BAG

New listener, Karen from New York wrote in and commented on our discussion about new banking fees and she says:

More like bank of Idiots! Let me tell you about this bank. I had an account with them for more then 3 years, my balance was $8,000 which was a lot, but I made my payments on time and all of sudden, I noticed that my balance was more. I am thinking hmm, so I called and this guy tells me, well you have to be an idiot not to know you pay back more then what you have in your account. I said but I am paying $150 a month and your charging me $152 in interest, I would never pay this off, and that my dear is not legal, well after an hour of arguing with this nincompoop, I said well, you will hear from me again. I e-mailed the attorney generals office, and yes you guessed it, it is indeed illegal, as any idiot would of known if they had a brain (which obviously he did not). Not only did they have to lower my interest (actually gave me no interest for a year) they returned $1000 to me. So just so people know there is always a bigger power out there to go to. Oh by the way, I paid off the balance after a year and called back the guy who I spoke to and said "now who is the idiot"?

We could not have said it better. Thanks for the email Karen and for your listener-ship!

Delaware will be the eighth state to pass a state-wide cell phone ban while driving. The new law, if signed, will call for headsets or wireless (Bluetooth) to be worn to use your cell phone. Holding your phone and either talking, texting or using the Internet will be illegal. We have some problems with the law. We love the idea, but there are one or two loop-holes. Can you guess what they are? Listen to the show for more. Also, visit the link below for more information on this bill. The bill has been sent to Governor Jack Markell for his signature and it is expected to be signed into law in early July.

We went over the status of the tropical depression, Alex and why hurricanes are being watched ever so closely these days because of the situation in the Gulf of Mexico. We are still wondering that while they are still trying to figure out how to cap the leak, why not place a bounty on the oil so that the cleanup can move along faster. Placing a bounty on the oil would put many people on the cleanup because they will exercise FREE ENTERPRISE which would stimulate the economy.

BP Oil Spill - Day 64

Tonight on the program, we spoke about a few issues including how your local bank may be crushing you with upcoming fees. Basically, because of the coming regulatory decision that will not allow them to charge exuberant overdraft fees. Therefore, they will be charging fees for basic banking services so this could be the end of FREE CHECKING. See the Yahoo News story link below for more.

JACKASS OF THE WEEK
Republican Congressman, Joe Barton is the top dog on the committee overseeing the BP Oil Spill, crisis and aftermath. He publicly apologized to BP CEO Tony Hayward for the Obama White House shaking them down for the $20 Billion Relief Fund. He further stated, "I apologize. ... I do not want to live in a country where any time a citizen or a corporation does something that is legitimately wrong it is subject to some sort of political pressure. ... Again, I apologize." So this guy is from Texas, right? Texas is a Gulf state in jeopardy of being affected by the oil crisis, right? So what the hell is his problem? BP is the one in control of the Deepwater Horizon. BP is the one who had no disaster plan. BP had no backup plan. That sounds like they are responsible to PAY! Joe Barton, if you have a problem with America, GTFO!

We spoke with Rob Shuhart who is a conscious observer of what is happening in Louisiana and he reports for us right on location about what is going on. First we want to mention that Rob reports that only 30% of Louisiana's commercial inland fisheries are closed and that is for precaution only. 70% are still in full production. He also states that Louisiana provides 30% of the country's seafood so be sure and ask for it at your local grocer or restaurant.

Along with Vida, we spoke with Rob about how things are developing down there in the Gulf. He reports that the environmental issue is worse than we are being told and that the largest problem right now is that Louisiana people want to be given the control needed to fix the problem themselves. They have the skills and know how and they feel it is there right to protect their own coastline. Billy Nungesser, Plaquemines Parish President has been the big champion for the people in trying to get this project done. We are seeking to get an interview with him as soon as possible. We will be having Rob report back regularly on the crisis in the Gulf of Mexico.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY "K THE INTERN"
(Even tho she does not do the intern thing anymore)

Tonight on the program, our scheduled music guest had to reschedule so we spoke about some of the more important issues in the news such as the ongoing issues with the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico and how we are awaiting for something to be done to avoid global disaster; which may be already late. We discussed the fact that the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 allows the President to intervene with whatever resources he needs to keep a disaster like this from impacting the United States. Well, it has impacted the United States...severely and why has he not gotten behind this act of Congress and started getting busy?

We also covered some entertainment (movie) news and notes.

In our second hour, we had a close up interview with Dr. Aubrey de Grey. Dr. de Grey is a Biomedical Gerontologist; that is a scientist who studies new ways to combat aging. What Dr. de Grey has come up with is a plan to combat and abolish diseases that kill us, such as Alzheimer's Disease, Cancer and others. The side effect, if you will, is longevity of life. According to de Grey, we have spent so long thinking that we grow old and die and that is the way it is supposed to be. However, he believes that he can prove that if we do things that will help our bodies be free from cancers and illnesses that degrade us, we can in turn live to the ripe old age of 150, 500, 1000 or even 1 Million years young!

de Grey has been studying this for more than fifteen years now so he has the edge. Many scientists agree with him and many do not. We had the absolute pleasure to listen to him and there is no way that what he says doesn't make sense. It makes complete sense. In fact, he believes that we can be within 25-50 years from starting the therapy required to cure our bodies from the things that ail us. That means our first 150 year old could be among us today. That is not science-fiction...that is pure excitement!

If you would like to find out more about what Dr. de Grey is doing and how you can help, please visit his website below. He did tell us that even volunteer help by way of skills are much needed as money; either way, research is going well and money and resources can make things go much faster. So make a donation; $3 today to be cancer free? Sign me up.

DAY 55

First up on the program, we interviewed the Seattle-based Alternative band Feral Children. We spoke about their "different" music style and we featured some of their tracks; On A Frozen Beach and Universe Design. Both songs were very cool, electric and yes, different. We found out that one of the interesting things about them is that they write their lyrics last after the melody of the song is complete. It seems like it would not work, but they tell us that it is the biggest part of the process to have a great melody first. We agree. Check out the band's web sites and take a listen to their music.

Later on the program, we spoke with Special Effects & Stunt Coordinator Steve Wolf of Wolf Stuntworks LLC regarding the BP oil spill. Now why would we speak to a Hollywood FX dude regarding this? Well, Steve is among other Hollywood folks who have offered their ideas and services to BP to help contain and clean up this mess in the Gulf of Mexico. For example, James Cameron (Director, Titanic) has offered his underwater HD camera systems for the site so BP has the clearest available picture for working on the leak. He was refused. Steve submitted a four part plan with scientific solutions to stopping the leak and an entrepreneurial solution to the cleanup. He was sent a form letter stating they will look into it. Why do they have the right to refuse help? At showtime, we are at 55 days of this tragedy. It is time for OUR government to step up, step in and fix this problem that is in OUR backyard.

Check out Steve Wolf's Plan - This is a PDF of the presentation he sent to British Petroleum.

IDEAS FOR A CHALLENGING ECONOMY
June 2010 Edition

Welcome to Behind The Mike's Ideas For A Challenging Economy. On this monthly segment, Executive Career Coach Kay Stout co-hosts the show and we explore the ways in which you can find new work, better work or just plain work. These tips are provided on the air free as a service to the global community by the WBTM Radio Network and The Behind The Mike Show.

This month we spoke about the importance of making career decisions from the heart and not a mental decision as the mental decisions lead to potential mistakes and regrets. Kay stressed the importance to consider a position that would benefit you with a total package including byt not limited to benefits, scheduling, etc and not always the almighty dollar.

Another item spoken about was that perhaps the better positions based on what we spoke of above may be able to be obtained by looking into employment with a smaller, private and local firm. The "Big Machine" is not necessarily the best option for everyone. One way to start your search is to look into your local Chamber of Commerce to see what companies are in your area and may be hiring.

Speaking of Chamber of Commerce, Kay stated that many of the local CoC have an insurance pool whereas small business members can join. This could be a valuable resource for insurance coverage if you are considering self-employment options.

Kay Stout is Managing Partner in Pacheco Stout Consulting and works as an executive career advisor for Oklahoma Professional Search, a leader in career transition. Contact her at kaystout AT mail.com

BEHIND THE MIKE'S 200TH EPISODE

Tonight on the program we celebrated our 200th show and we let the conversation flow on it's own. Among some of the discussion we talked about was...

Are Cameras The New Guns? We explored a story that discussed the fact that there are 3 states (and more pending) who have adopted new laws that will charge you for "wire-tapping" if you video an on-duty officer, even if the information is needed for your defense. Here is a news tidbit and the accompanying video that is spoken of...

A recent arrest in Maryland is both typical and disturbing.

On March 5, 24-year-old Anthony John Graber III's motorcycle was pulled over for speeding. He is currently facing criminal charges for a video he recorded on his helmet-mounted camera during the traffic stop.

The case is disturbing because:

1) Graber was not arrested immediately. Ten days after the encounter, he posted some of he material to YouTube, and it embarrassed Trooper J. D. Uhler. The trooper, who was in plainclothes and an unmarked car, jumped out waving a gun and screaming. Only later did Uhler identify himself as a police officer. When the YouTube video was discovered the police got a warrant against Graber, searched his parents' house (where he presumably lives), seized equipment, and charged him with a violation of wiretapping law.

2) Baltimore criminal defense attorney Steven D. Silverman said he had never heard of the Maryland wiretap law being used in this manner. In other words, Maryland has joined the expanding trend of criminalizing the act of recording police abuse. Silverman surmises, "It's more [about] ‘contempt of cop' than the violation of the wiretapping law."

3) Police spokesman Gregory M. Shipley is defending the pursuit of charges against Graber, denying that it is "some capricious retribution" and citing as justification the particularly egregious nature of Graber's traffic offenses. Oddly, however, the offenses were not so egregious as to cause his arrest before the video appeared.

Next on the show we discussed a lot of gathered topics with our friend Jason from Delaware regarding illegal immigrants, what to do about them, subsidized employment, homeless, government, regulation and more. Jason, Lady B and I all discussed these issues and some possible solutions. It seems to us that the common man has great ideas but the government does not want to hear them. Take for example the gentleman from Pennsylvania who developed a kitty litter styled product that would absorb the oil from the spill in the Gulf of Mexico and form it into easy to clean balls. Has he gotten any calls yet....NO!

Later, our good friend Jack Hosley from Wander Radio stopped by to congratulate us on 200 shows and we discussed the Entertainment Weekly Top 100 Characters of the Last 20 Years. The top ten from the list are:

10. SpongeBob SquarePants from SpongeBob SquarePants
9. Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City
8. Hannibal Lecter from The Silence of the Lambs and its sequels
7. Edward Scissorhands from Edward Scissorhands
6. Rachel Green from Friends
5. The Joker from The Dark Knight
4. Tony Soprano from The Sopranos
3. Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
2. Harry Potter from the Harry Potter series
1. Homer Simpson from The Simpsons

Do you agree with any of these choices. We had quite the debate on the number one selection. Who do you think the number one should have been? We'd like to know. Email us and let us know. We felt that Matt Foley should have been on the list...no one knew who he was. Now you do...watch...

Oh, and was it necessary that this made the top 100??? Really???

So there it is...we had a great time. We thank all the guests who have graced our show, we thank all the staff who have come and gone and we thank YOU the listener for coming each time and listening each week. We Love Ya!

LEAVING HOLLYWOOD WORLD PREMIER
Sunday June 6, 2010 5:00 PM Eastern
Historic Senator Theater in Baltimore, Maryland

Tonight on the program, we first talked about an email that has been going around that says HR3590 calls for rolling the amount of your health care premiums into your gross income and taxed. We verified this whole thing through Snopes.com and here is what we learned:

In general, beginning in 2013 (not 2011), H.R. 3590 imposes a 40% excise tax on the value of employer-sponsored medical insurance that exceeds a given threshold (initially $23,000 annually). This excise tax would be paid by the insurance company, not the employee, and is expected to affect less than 10% of families covered by health insurance:

Many employers pay most of the premium for health coverage. Workers pick up the rest but pay no taxes on the employer's often-substantial contribution. That's why many unions have bargained hard for generous health coverage over the years, even if that meant forgoing a bigger pay raise.

The new agreement would take away the tax advantage for a small portion of the health benefit by imposing a 40 percent tax on the amount by which the premiums for employer-sponsored health coverage exceed specified thresholds. That would be $23,000 a year for a family, starting in 2013. The tax on a $25,000 plan would be $800, or 40 percent of $2,000. The insurance company would pay the tax but would almost certainly pass it along to the employer and its employees.

That $23,000 threshold is well above the current average of $13,400 for a family plan. By 2013, more than 90 percent of all family plans are projected to still fall below the threshold. In the following years, the tax threshold would rise more slowly than the likely rate of inflation in medical costs, which could mean the plans of millions of workers a small minority of the work force would be subject to the tax in theory.

Most likely, insurers will drop their premiums just below the threshold. They could do that by setting higher deductibles and co-payments, managing access to care more tightly, or reducing benefits.

Later...we welcomed cast and crew of the new movie, LEAVING HOLLYWOOD. The premise of the movie follows a child star from a National TV Sitcom who leaves the stardom and has to become acclimated again into "normal" life. It's an Independent film with a staff of hard working individuals. We had on the interview:

Be sure to check out the web site for more information about this very cool concept for a movie. We all see how child stars get along through tabloid papers now we get a glimpse into the more personal side of it and watch our star going through the trials and tribulations. Tickets are still available for the Red Carpet World Premiere on June 6, 2010 so get the information fast and make it a date to see the event and the movie.
