Show Notes - 02/22/2011

Welcome to Behind the Mike. Tonight on the show Tony Richards hosted once more as Jack from Wander Radio had the night off and we welcomed back an old favorite of the show, okay okay he's just a favorite of the show. He's not REALLY old.... more like ancient! Meet Mr. Frank Cotolo.... the host of Cotolo Chronicles... the Internet radio talk show which started even before people knew what the Internet and talk shows were.

Tonight's Trivia Question: According to the Deep Sleep Academy, what is the most common thing people dream about when they fall asleep at night??? Know the answer?? Email us! Studio@behindthemike.info or contest@wbtm.info Contest ends at 11:59pm THIS Saturday night.

After a lively but brief discussion, Tony and Frank welcomed our main guest to the show, singer songwriter and one of the best musical guests we have had on the show in quite some time, Erin Dickens.

Erin is an accomplished musician, singer, songwriter amd so meone who has performed with many other superstars in the talent and music business for years. She is a founding member of the Manhattan Transfer, but left the group after only a few seasons in search of other conquests to achieve. She moved to Hawaii to get away from the music business, yet as they say.... "You can take the girl away from music, but you cannot take the music away from the girl!" She moved back east and developed a unique richness to music both in the jazz realm and outside of it. She is one of the few musicians that can actually sing on key both live and in the studio WITHOUT pitch correction tools and we featured not only one of her songs, but she even did a little accapella on the show as well.

Show Notes - 02/20/2011

Happy Sunday! Well, Joel is still M.I.A. so Tony and Jack sat in once more and had a bit of fun on the show tonight.

This week's TRIVIA contest - According to the Deep Sleep Institute, what is the most common thing people dream about when they fall asleep at night??

Know the answer?? Email us! Contest AT WBTM.info or studio AT Behindthemike.info Contest will remain open until 11:59 PM EST Saturday Feb 26, 2011

The first hour was filled with some pretty interesting topics as we talked about an alarming fact. According to a Transportation Security Administration official, those naked body scanners seem to show a lot of things. That is, of course, unless you just happen to be looking for a handgun ! Oops... did I forget to mention where it was? Tune in and find out where! California govenor Jerry Brown is at it again....trying to curb his state's 25 billion, yes BILLION with a B, deficit. Monitoring government spending is one thing....He has frozen state hiring, cut official cell phone use, and now, he's cracking down on coffee mugs and key chains.

In his latest push to close his state's staggering deficit, Brown has forbidden all state agencies from wasting tax dollars on freebie trinkets like hats and cups. "Not a cent of taxpayer money should be spent on flashlights, ashtrays or other unnecessary items, most of which likely end up in landfills," Brown said in an official statement. So... Mr Brown..... How much did THAT advertising campaign cost?

Ever wanteds to be on daytime TV??? Do yourself a favor. Do NOT follow this girl's lead. You see, apparently she was on probation from a drug charge in Ohio and was dating a much older man. The topic came up on the Naury Povich show about Girls who Date Older Men. Needing the money for bills and knowing the show paid for airline tickets and hotel while there, she signed up... Forgetting the fact, people on probation are not supposed to leave the state, she and her boyfriend went and did the show. All was fine until, well...when they came home she decided to dump him. Care to guess what HE did?? You got it! Turned her in and sent them a copy of the show and plane ticket to prove it!

*** Note to self...... next time I do a Behind the Mike Show, find out what Joel is REALLY up to.......

Finally on the show, we welcomed back Kay Stout and her guest Ginny Clark. Ginny and Kay have had a lot of experience in the field of career counseling and Ginny shares some of her insights on the job marketplace as well as what you need to do to get ahead in this day of fast changing economic times.

Show Notes - 02/15/2011

Tonight on the show, Tony Richards and Jack from Wander Radio took over the hosting duties and put together a very interesting show. Joel was away on assignment to Egypt and we sent him away with a microphone, headphones and a wireless communications device to allow him to contact us on the show with an update on how things were going over there. One little problem.....we forgot the 9 volt battery for his microphone and Radio Shack stopped their battery a month club about five years ago....so.... no Joel. On the show tonight, we spoke with Margaret Bonham, noted book author who has over 30 books to her credit, both in the fiction and non-fiction categories. She told us a little about how she got started and what motivates her into creating the characters and story lines in her books. Writing fantasy takes a lot of creativity and she definitely has a lot of that!

In the second part of the hour, we started out briefly talking about the threat of scams that pop up in your email in the form of e-cards and other ways that cybercriminals target unsuspecting Internet users and things to look for, especially around holidays. After that, Tony and Jack covered some of the news of the day, including some real life, down-to earth translations of just how much the ever growing US deficit is costing each of us. Back in the year 2000, it was roughly $20,000 per citizen. Despite a pledge on Monday by President Barack Obama to reduce federal spending over the next five years, the deficit continues to grow . As reported by figures obtained by USDebtClock.org, and as it continues to balloon towards 14 TRILLION, yes with a 'T', we decided to try and put it into perspective using numbers everyone can understand. Here are just some examples:
  • Current cost per citizen of national debt - 45,000, up 25,000 in just 11 years
  • At a cost of $3,676 per ticket, you could buy 4,080,522,307 tickets to the Sujper Bowl, or the entire attendance for the next 56,674 Super Bowls if the stadium held 72,000 fans
  • Speaking of football..... Heinz Ward of the Pittsburgh Steelers made $5,804,680 last season. If his salary remained constant, you could afford to pay him for another two MILLION years
  • Home foreclosure?? No problem. At an average price of 242,000, with 14 trillion dollars, you could purchase an estimated 61 million homes.

Share your views on the Facebook discussion board! If you prefer, drop us an email at studio AT behindthemike.info. The email of the week could win a prize.

Remember, all emails MUST be addressed with a name and city, however we will withhold that info if so requested if your letter makes it to air.

Tonight on the show we covered some news notes around the globe and points of interest. Later we interviewed Singer & Songwriter Holly Long about her musical infusion of Pop, Soul and Funk very reminiscent of the Pop 70s era of music. The album is called FREQUENCY and is available now through her website below. We featured the track "Pretty Picture Frame" and what a great sound she has. Be sure and check her out on Facebook and get the CD.

We then interviewed Rick Rodgers and Ross Landy who are the co-owners of the new WPAZ AM1370 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. They joined the show to discuss the history of the station, how they acquired the station from Great Scott Broadcasting and some of the things they are doing to make it a fine community radio station.

Discussion on the show included some re-cap on Super Bowl 45 including some of the more interesting moments such as Christina Aguliera's fantastic rendition of the National Anthem..she should be escorted out of the country. How the hell can you not know that song? How about Cameron Diaz feeding lover Alex Rodriguez his popcorn. What a moment for the Super Bowl books.

Next we spoke about some energy saving tips around the home. Namely the "always-on" devices such as cell phone chargers, printers, computer speakers, cable set top boxes, etc. They make a device that allows you to plug in a host of related devices and have one as the lead device. When the lead device is turned off the related devices power out as well. These smart power strips can range from $25-75.
